De Maria’s delightful Mendelssohn

The two concertos by Mendelssohn are still among De Maria’s most completely successful interpretations: he dominates the arduous pages with the sweep of an authentic virtuoso and restores style to the pieces with supreme eleganceFLORENCE: Nearly twenty years ago Pietro De Maria won 1st Prize playing Mendelssohn’s Concerto op. 40 in a screening of young pianists held by the Orchestra della Toscana. At 38, the pianist has come back to collaborate with the orchestra that marked one of the first important moments in his career, playing the same piece once again together with the Concerto op. 25 in a program directed by Hobart Earle, which will be repeated throughout the region as well as in Treviso, Turin and Perugia.
The two concertos by Mendelssohn are still among De Maria’s most completely successful interpretations: he dominates the arduous pages with the sweep of an authentic virtuoso and restores style to the pieces with supreme elegance reconciling their dazzling swiftness and their delicate lyricism.
The magnificent performance, assisted authoritatively by Earle, roused the enthusiasm of the audience at the Teatro Verdi and the soloist added two encores by Liszt and Mendelssohn as admirable as the rest.
