THE NOCTURNES REVIEWED BY LORENZO ARRUGA - IL GIORNALE
Once, under the circus tent where we used to play for the Piccolo Teatro on the outskirts of Milan, Dino Ciani came to play: he put his hands on the piano and I immediately felt that there was a different quality of silence and attention in the audience. As if to say: here is a poet.
Today, Pietro De Maria is among those rare natural accomplices of music: his touch, his concentration, and nature simply unite with careful study and culture and we can hear this from the first note.
In Chopin’s Nocturnes recorded for Decca this quality is evident, and so is De Maria’s wonderful, innate freedom. Here we find, above all, a great desire to communicate the discovery of that intense, imaginative romanticism, chord by chord, melody by melody, colour by colour.
I think I can feel the unique, fascinating breath of youth.
